I'm Dimity.*

Whether your goal is to be stronger for your next decade, more consistent with your everyday workouts, or take on a race that pushes you outside your comfort zone, I’d love to help you get there.

*It's pronounced DIM-ih-tee, but Dim works too.

I love to hike, bike, and swim.

I’m this close to loving strength training.

And I still love running and triathlons, but I'm unable to do them anymore.

More than anything, I love guiding women with the workouts, the perspective, and the human connection necessary to do the things they love to do.

Over the past 15 years, as Chief Training Director at Another Mother Runner, I’ve helped thousands of women stay consistent, feel strong, and discover a more confident, energetic version of themselves.

I’ve learned that sustainable fitness isn’t built on speed, streaks, or perfection. It’s built on showing up with consistency, compassion, and community. That’s the foundation of everything I do today.

I’ve been an endurance athlete nearly my entire life.

First as a competitive rower, then as a lifelong (non-competitive) runner with plenty of triathlon, cycling, swimming, and big hikes mixed in.

After years of injury cycles (and a little nudge from menopause), I learned the hard way that endurance alone isn’t enough.

Now, at 53, I’m passionate about helping active women stay strong, mobile, and adventure-ready—without burning out.

I bring deep credentials and even deeper enthusiasm to every program I create. (Honestly, I’m a 6'4" cheerleader at heart; they just didn’t make a uniform my size back in the day.)

NASM-certified personal trainer • Girls Gone Strong Menopause Coaching Specialist • Chief Training Director at Another Mother Runner for 10 years • RRCA/Lydiard-certified running coach • ACE-certified group fitness instructor • Spinning instructor

I'm also a writer.

Back when people read magazines, not their phones, I spent about two decades writing sports + fitness articles.

I held staff positions at Self, ESPN: The Magazine, and Sports Illustrated for Women, and wrote for a myriad of publications from Runner's World to the New York Times.

Along with Sarah Bowen Shea, I co-authored a trilogy of running books—Run Like a Mother, Train Like a Mother, and Tales from Another Mother Runner—which began, and then was inspired by, the amazing community of women at Another Mother Runner.

My newest book—The 27th Mile: How to Smooth the Rough Transition out of Your Running Years—will be out in late February 2026.

“So many titles exist about the joy of running or how to become a runner, but rarely has there existed a book honoring the choice and/or necessity to take leave of the sport. Not only does she pay homage to all that the sport has done for her and her community, but Dimity also takes time and space to honor her own body and spirit, inviting other longtime runners to offer their stories as well. When you are ready to make that decision, make sure to read this first.”

—Mirna Valerio, runner, adventurer, and author of A Beautiful Work in Progress

“Runners tie their identities to their hobby like few others. It serves us well—until it doesn’t. Then what? The grief and loss are real when running is no longer an option. The 27th Mile is the gentle, kind, and sound advice we didn’t know we needed in order to move on to the next phase of life.”

—Erin Strout, journalist and writer

“The 27th Mile is far more truthful and helpful than that old runners’ canard, ‘There is no finish line.’ In fact, we all stop running at some point—whether from burnout, injury, or aging. McDowell understands that we must grieve first, but then get going again. Sadness gives way to revival and new life-sustaining practices. Yes, you can.”

—Amby Burfoot, author, Boston Marathon winner, and longtime Runner's World editor
